Today we welcomed back Marion to her first round of Friday golf since February 2010 when she had her skiing accident. It is really good to see Marion back on the golf course again and I am sure everyone was pleased she got around the course OK.

Lets hope that Brian will soon be able to join us again once he has recovered enough from his knee surgery.

We will update the golf.almerimartoday.com site with the latest results when we get the chance over the next day or two.

It is with great sadness that I write that Leif passed away in Sweden earlier this week after a short illness.

Our thoughts and those of all Leif´s friends here in Almerimar are with Cecilia at this time.

We will be arranging a collection for a charity chosen by Cecilia in remembrance of Leif.

We would just like to thank our dear friend primera for all his hard work helping us fit a new door to our roof terrace today .

There´s still quite a lot of tidying up work to do but the new door is fitted and then I get the job of painting it.

 

 

Wishing Rudolph a belated happy birthday for yesterday and thank you for buying us all a drink to celebrate it with you after the Friday golf. Hope you enjoyed your day.

Well done to the winners yesterday. A first time win on Friday golf for Idris's team of Vic, Richard C and John Flynn with 133 points (the format was XxY+Z). Also well done to Hans O for winning nearest the pin and how lovely that he gave his chocolates to Marion, who joined us after the golf for a drink and chat.

Onto the losing team which I was part of . We scored 118  which, looking back over past XYZs, would not have necessarily come last. It just shows how the scoring on this format can be so extreme. On 2 July, 94 points was last place and 130 1st place with the next best score being 114.

Still, I suppose it was my turn as it seems like I have escaped them for quite a while (11 June to be precise!). At least they were the plain chocolates which I am quite fond of.

Happy wedding anniversary to us today, 16 years! 

We officially got married on the 29th and then had a church blessing on the 30th so we don´t always know which day to celebrate. A lot depends on what else is going on or what day of the week the dates fall on each year.

Anyway, we thought we´d celebrate it today as we are playing in the regular Friday golf tomorrow. We did a bit of work this morning then sorted out teams and bottles for Friday golf later then we  popped down into the marina for a meal tonight.

We had a fantastic dinner at El Arroz and bumped into lots of friends including Richard & Ingrid and Fintan & Margaret while we were there.

For starter, we opted for, after much deliberation, mushrooms and clams in a wine sauce. This dish caught my eye and I persuaded John to try it. Along with that, we had the mini shrimp omelettes, which we had tried in the past. These were also very good and complimented the mushrooms and clams.

Main course was fish for both of us. I love fish and given the opportunity to have fresh fish when eating out, I pretty much tend to select that. I opted for sea bass which was plentiful and flavoursome. John chose the tuna which also was a good sized portion and tender.

The marina is buzzing now as we hit the holiday season so all in all a good time for local businesses here in Almerimar.

He was here this morning to open the new old peoples centre on the ground floor of the Porto Fino complex. Apparently the work cost more than 249,000 euros according to the article here on the town hall website.

Yes I know that either Mimmo is on stilts or Eduardo is on his knees.

Birthday boy 1 met birthday boy 2 in El Arroz this evening after the Spain match. We only found out that it was Eduardo´s birthday when he came along to the second half of the match.

I have done a quick calculation and I believe that it is possible that Mimmo could be Eduardo´s dad. Stranger things have happened.

Anyway at the bar where Eduardo had bought me a celebratory drink for his birthday (ta) the discussion turned to handicaps and a challenge has been set.

Today Jacqui has a 13.3 handicap and Eduardo is at 15.3. Eduardo believes that in 1 year his handicap will be lower than that of Jacqui.

So the handicap challenge is now underway. I may provide some updates on handicaps for the two participants over the coming year. May the best man or lady win.

The latest edition of the Roquetas and Almerimar version of the Sol Times was published yesterday, 9 June 2010. We had an article published about one of the local golfers here in Almerimar, Hans Ooft. This is part 1 wih part 2 planned for publication next week along with some thoughts from Hans about the upcoming Wold Cup (if I get a chance to interview him in the next few days). 

The results from our Friday golf competition were published as well on the back page of the paper.

Just a quick note of thanks to Shaun from Marion and Almerimar Today.

Marion now has Shauns exercise bike on loan and we are sure that it will help with her physio work to help her recover from the broken leg she suffered some time ago.

Marion has been in touch asking if we know of anyone who has an exercise bike that she could borrow or know of anywhere that loans them out.

She has been advised by her physiotherapist to try and start exercising her leg following her unfortunate skiing accident. As she is unable to get to a gym easily, a home exercise bike is the best solution.

Please get in touch with Marion direct or via us if you can help her out.

Earlier today I was down in the Chinese shop in the square buying some cheap paint brushes as we had to paint some railings. While there I bumped into Tony and Doff. Tony mentioned that he was back playing golf again for the first time in 9 months since he damaged his ankle. It is good to see one of our injured golfers back on the Almerimar course again.

Doug was out for a little while with a knee injury but he is back playing now.

We still have Marion (broken leg) and Brian (recovering from a knee replacement op) not able to play at the moment. We look forward to welcoming them back on the course soon.

UPDATED 7 MAY 2010: Included a photo of Joan with a surprise gift from the Friday golfers.

Happy birthday to Joan for yesterday. A few of us met up at El Arroz for dinner last night, which was very good, as usual.

During the evening Inés brought round some champagne glasses and we celebrated Joan´s birthday with some nice cava.

 

Congratulations to Jules on becoming a property owner here in Almerimar as of yesterday. We celebrated with her and friends over a bottle or two of bubbly followed by an evening starting off at Gourmet for a few drinks and tapas (which were excellent) then onto Asador for salad and chicken and chips.

We wish Jules many happy times in her new apartment.

Well done to Marianne for scoring a hole in one on the 14th hole on the Master Course here at Almerimar on 16 April 2010.

As you can see from the image from Google Maps above it is a 117m hole from the ladies tee with a big carry over water. Marianne scored the ace with her trusty 9 wood.

Marion has broken her leg in 4 places while skiing. She has had a metal plate inserted into the leg to help the bones set. So she is not able to move much for a few weeks and then unable to put any weight on the leg for a number of weeks more.

As quite a few of you probably know one of our regular golfers, Brian, has been waiting to have knee replacement surgery for some time. He ended up going in for the operation around a week ago. When I first spoke to him about it he said that he expected to be out of hospital and back home on Monday 28 December.

So we called in to the Poniente hospital earlier today after having dropped Julie and Roz back at the airport. To our surprise we arrived as Brian had just been told that he could leave hospital today, a day earlier than expected. Lisa, Salva and Sue were at the hospital to collect Brian and take him back to his apartment here in Almerimar.

By now Brian should be back home recovering  so I´m sure that he would be very happy to receive emails, texts and visitors popping in to say hello as he is probably not going to be very mobile for a while yet.

We wish Brian and speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the Almerimar course as soon as he can play in 2010.

One of the early articles we wrote when we first started this site just over a year ago was about Hans Ooft.

Having mentioned Hans while at La Soleá earlier this evening I thought it worth adding a link here to our original article. Just in case people have not seen the article. 

One thing I have to say about Hans is that his football managerial skills must definitely be better than his golf ones.

Another year older today....  we celebrated over dinner down at El Arroz last night along with Daisy and Doreen and Alan and Sharon. El Arroz is almost becoming like the 19th hole of a golf course given the amount of golfers who eat there on Thursday nights.

Thanks to Alan for starting the evening off with a very nice bottle of cava between us and thanks to Inés for the candle on John´s dessert. Just as well it was only 1 candle!!

Jacqui has just spotted that Pedro has fillled in his profile saying he is a Southampton supporter. My guess is he is the first one to register here as I think they are a dying breed. Pedro must be going through the same sort of pain I am with the Boro at the moment.

Many thanks to Ray and Mary for a great evening last night. It was a lovely way to spend a saturday evening. Celebrating a birthday well into the night with a group of friends.

The cake was very good indeed. Thanks to Jane, a friend of our hairdresser Pauline, who made the cake. She makes very nice christmas cakes as well. No doubt Pauline will be advertising the christmas cakes when we get a bit closer to christmas.

We have just heard from Marianne and Sune that they were out playing 18 holes of golf with tall Jan recently. I´m sure that all Jan´s friends in Almerimar and elsewhere will be very to happy to hear that he is out playing golf again.
