Almerimar sailing school

Jacqui and I popped down to see what happens at the regular Saturday morning sailing school session for kids in Almerimar.

I met Juan Carlos, who runs the sailing school in Almerimar, a few days ago following a suggestion from the people at Inox Almerimar.

He doesn´t speak much English and my Spanish is so so but we arranged to meet up today so Jacqui and I could take some photos of the sailing school in action.

The sailing school is around the back of the boat yard on Darsena 3. You drive all the way around Darsena 3 past the entrance to the boat yard where you find Náuticos Paolo, past A n C sails and Alamar chandlery with El Mar Poniente in the square on your left. Then turn right, go past Inox Almerimar and then loop around the back of the harbour for around 100 yards and the sailing school is on the right.

The school runs classes for kids every Saturday morning from around 11-12.00 until 14.30 right through the year. Juan Carlos showed us the classroom as well as allowing us to take pictures of the kids in the boats.

We discussed pricing for lessons which was quite complicated. It depended on whether the kids had a family member who owned a boat berthed in the port, whether they had family that were members of the sailing club and some other factors. However, we did note that you pay on a monthly basis.

There were 5 kids taking part today. While we were there 3 were sailing small boats and 2 were helping Juan Carlos in a slightly larger boat. They all seemed to be really enjoying themselves.

If you are thinking of getting your kid(s) involved it is probably best to talk to Juan Carlos and make sure someone can speak Spanish. From our experience here it is the kids themselves who have learned Spanish at school and they spend a lot of time translating things for their parents.
