Why is the weather always bad for England vs. ROE?
Friday, 27 January 2012 09:32
John Woodhead
It is very dark here in Almerimar at the moment. We had rumbles of thunder from around 6am until 9am but they seem to have stopped for a while now. So far we have no rain but the sky doesn´t look very good. Lets hope we can manage to play the golf today.

Driving away the January blues in Spain

Jacqui Mays
A new car is unlikely to be a priority for most people as the Christmas bills land on the doormat.
But January is the best time to buy a car thanks to fresh stock and
dealers eager to make a sale during the quiet period, according to car
specialist Glass’s Guide. Read more on theolivepress.

John Woodhead

UPDATED AND BUMPED TO TOP OF FRONT PAGE AS I ADDED A PHOTO THIS AFTY.
I have been rushing around like mad today doing various things. While popping down to see Jacqui in the golf shop I noticed that there is a sign saying that a photo studio is to open under Porto Fino just next to the Parafarmacia. Just over the road from the Minimal cafe bar.

Problems in the olive oil sector
Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:10
Jacqui Mays
The consumption of olive oil is up, this year’s harvest is expected
to exceed 63,000 tons in Málaga province, up 9,500 tons on last season,
but the sector has made a loss of €11 million compared to last season as
the price per kilo has fallen.
The price received by the farmers has fallen from 18 cents per kilo
to 16 cents per kilo and producers are asking the Ministry to allow
private storage of oil to force the price up.

Spain rejects breathalysers for cars
Saturday, 21 January 2012 19:10
Jacqui Mays
Spain has rejected breathalysers for cars on the basis that “the only safe way to drive is with zero alcohol in your system”.
‘Alcolocks’, which have just been made obligatory for all new cars in
France, stop vehicles functioning if drivers breathing into them have
had too much to drink. But traffic bosses have said the decision whether to drive should not be
about how much alcohol you have drunk – but more about whether you have
drunk at all.

St Lucia twinned with Almerimar?
Saturday, 21 January 2012 11:06
Julie Morris
Thanks to Jules for this following her recent cruise....
On my global travels I think I might
have found a contender to be ' twinned' with Almerimar. Places or cities are
usually twinned based on similar economic, cultural, buildings or
heritage.
Following my whistle stop tour of the
Caribbean - I'd like to suggest that St Lucia be considered for 'twinning!' with
Almerimar.
On the surface - statistics - don't
show many similarities. Although there is an abundance of similar flowers such
as hibiscus, lantanus and bougainvillea.
Location:
Caribbean,
island between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, north of Trinidad and
Tobago
Chief of State:
Prime
Minister Stephenson King
Head of State:
Queen
Elizabeth II, represented by Governor General Dame Pearlette
Louisy
However there was something else I spotted
which just stood out!!!

40% drop in Spanish holiday costs
Saturday, 21 January 2012 10:51
Jacqui Mays
Prices 40 per cent cheaper than five years ago are now offered in many of Spain's tourist hotspots.
This could lead to a big increase in the nation's tourists this year,
especially from the UK, with British holidaymakers further benefiting
from a 6.4 per cent rise in the value of the pound against the euro in
the past three months. Read more on EWN.
Selling the Spanish sun

Solar panel owners could soon be flogging the electricity they create to energy companies.
Those connected to Endesa’s electricity supply whose panels absorb
more energy than they use will be able to inject the surplus back into
the grid – and later have its value deducted from their bill. (Can´t see that happening in the UK somehow!!). Read more on theolivepress.
Egg timing
Friday, 20 January 2012 09:23
Jacqui Mays
We´ve all reached for the biscuit tin to perk us up during
the post-lunch slump but now eggs are being hailed as an unlikely
alternative.
Scientists have discovered that proteins found in egg whites help us
feel more alert and are a more effective alternative to the
carbohydrates found in sweet treats. Read more on theolivepress.
Hmm, it reminds me when we were kids my mum used to make toasted soldiers with marmite on :-) for dipping in your egg (or not in my case! not being a great lover of eggs).
Using your dominant eye to line up putts

Peter White
Thanks to Chalky for providing us with this putting tip. See here on the Simon Sheppard site for details. Another way of finding out your dominant eye is to raise your arm and point your hand as if firing a gun. Whichever eye you use automatically to sight the "gun" is your dominant eye.

Mosquitoes love smelly feet
Wednesday, 18 January 2012 18:11
Jacqui Mays
To avoid being eaten alive by mosquitoes, you need to keep your feet clean. (errr, not true in my case as I like to think I keep mine clean and they have always eaten me to bits :-( Saying that, I have only suffered a handful of bites so far this year, so lets hope it stays that way.
The article goes on to say.... Scientists in the Netherlands have discovered that mosquitoes – which
carry the deadly malaria disease – actually love smelly feet.
The discovery comes after researchers sampled sweat from the feet of
48 male volunteers aged 20 to 64 who were told to wear special nylon
socks for 24 hours before sampling.

Baked taties for two
Wednesday, 18 January 2012 17:50
John Woodhead
It is not very often that Jacqui and I eat potatoes. We tend to avoid both potatoes and bread to try to keep our weight down. However once in a while we like a baked potato. Now after 7 years in Spain we have finally found somewhere to buy a small number of potatoes of a perfect size for baking. In the past all we could get was a large bag of potatoes where we had to pick out the ones that were big enough for baking. As we don't eat potatoes very often we then ended up throwing away a lot of the smaller ones.
Now we have the answer to our potato shopping - it is Lidl. They now stock a mesh bag of 5 similar medium size potatoes that are just what we need. Perfect for the occasional potato treat. I guess we could probably have picked some up loose at one of the vegetable stalls at the El Ejido market. However that involves shopping on specific Wednesdays each month which is far too organised for us.
